Secret Songs is the first full-length LP from the Boston, MA trio, The Autumn Rhythm. The Autumn Rhythm craft haunting, minimalist songs of blissful sorrow — music that truly wears its heart on its sleeve. Their honest, understated melodies are punctuated by Valerie Allen’s lush vocals in a style that has been described by The Village Voice as “intimate, narcotic, and surprisingly mature”. The Autumn Rhythm have also garnered comparisons to the Velvet Underground, Galaxie 500, Yo La Tengo, Ida and Cat Power. Having hailed from Boston, Brooklyn, and now Boston again, high school sweethearts Valerie Allen and Eli Queen began writing songs together in Boston during the winter of 2000. The Autumn Rhythm continued on in New York City while Val attended college and released their first EP on Hello Doll Records in July 2001. While living in Brooklyn, The Autumn Rhythm recorded a four song EP at Marcata Studios, with Paul Maroon of The Walkmen. Secret Songs followed later, in November 2002 at Marlborough Farms with The Ladybug Transistor's Gary Olson and his studio partner Bill Wells. The album features Lou Miller on drums as well as guest appearances by Kevin Barker of Aden, and Gary Olson himself. The Autumn Rhythm have shared stages with such great bands as The Ladybug Transistor, Aden, The Naysayer, Dan Littleton, Tara Jane O'Neil, K, Sophie Drinker, and The Walkmen. This ambitious young band has already developed an intensely powerful live show through regular performances in Boston and New York City, and the addition of Boston musician and close friend Martin Pavlinic has only added to the Autumn Rhythm’s depth and presence onstage. An irresistible collection of sad and dreamy pop, Secret Songs is stunning debut album from a promising young band. Albums this moving don’t come along very often, and we’re sure you’ll agree this this a band to watch and a collection of songs to treasure.
